[WILDE (Oscar) (1854-1900)]
- MERRILL (Stuart), American Symbolist poet (1863-1915) L.A.S. Paris (n.d.) 4 p. in-8°. Interesting letter on the (Oscar) Wilde affair: he explains "It is only today that Deschamps launches the petition. It will undoubtedly take at least a week to obtain the desired signatures in France... If Zola, Daudet, Goncourt, Sardou etc. are willing to lend us the support of their names, the English will certainly sign. Here is the text of the petition... To Her Most Excellent Majesty the Queen. Madam, the subscribers acting solely on behalf of humanity and art... ». This letter announces the petition launched by Stuart Merril and Leon Deschamps to Queen Victoria on behalf of Oscar Wilde then imprisoned. This petition was very badly received, Alphonse Daudet and Émile Zola refused, Victorien Sardou replied "It's too much filthy mud for me to get involved... "François Coppée "agreed to sign the petition as a member of the society for the protection of animals".
