Ludovic Napoléon LEPIC (1839-1889)
View of a mill on the river Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. (Retouching). 162 x 100 cm Viscount Lepic, descendant of a prestigious military family, preferred to devote himself to painting. In spite of his academic training, he was quickly attracted to painting from the ground up and devoted himself to the maritime landscapes of the English Channel, particularly the beach at Berck. Like Boudin, he finely captured the light of the beaches at low tide and the changing weather of the Norman skies. He exhibited at the Impressionist exhibitions of 1874 and 1876, sharing a long friendship with Edgar Degas who represented him in several of his paintings. Passionate about archaeology, he also traveled to Egypt from where he brought back many drawings and studies. A recent exhibition "Ludovic Napoleon Lepic, painter, archaeologist under Napoleon III" (2017-2018) at the Museum of National Archaeology of Saint-Germain-en -Laye, as well as a monograph by Thierry Zimmer have recently paid him a deserved tribute.
