Jacques-André Portail began his career as an engineer and architect, profession learned from his father in Brittany. In 1738, Philibert Orry, Superintendent of the King's Buildings, called him to his service and named him Dessinateur du Roy. Known in the 18th century for his precise and meticulous drawings, he found a new audience in the 19th century with collectors such as Goncourt and Chennevières who appreciated his figures with sanguine and black pencil
