Jean-Marc Nattier is 39 years old when he decides to get married. He married Marie-Madeleine de La Roche, 16 years old, on January 26, 1724. An outstanding harpsichordist, she "united in herself what talents, beauty, youth and graces can have that are seductive". She died in 1742.
They had four children.
Marie-Catherine-Pauline, born in 1725, married in 1747 with the portraitist Louis Tocqué, a student of her father's.
Jean-Frédéric-Marc, born in 1728, died accidentally while drowning in the Tiber in 1754 while studying at the Académie de France.
Charlotte-Claudine, born in 1730, married the lawyer and diplomat François-Philippe Brochier in 1754.
Madeleine-Sophie, born in 1734, married the painter Michel-Ange Challes in 1763. She died in 1814. In her will, she indicates "a small black and gold frame containing under glass six heads of the family drawn by my father (...), a large frame containing under glass eight heads of the family and friends (see Philippe Renard, "Nattier", 1999, ed. Monelle Hayot, p.166).

The drawings were made at different times, as shown in the two portraits of Madeleine-Sophie as a child and young wo
