Pietro de ROSSI (? vers 1761-Saint Pétersbourg 1831) - Lot 96
Pietro de ROSSI (? vers 1761-Saint Pétersbourg 1831) Venus and Adonis Miniature 12.5 x 12.5 cm Signed and dated lower left P. de Rossi f. 1803 Provenance: Sale of the C collection. Pape, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 18 March 1938, n° 128. Our miniature is a reproduction of the painting by Pierre Paul Rubens, kept at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. The original of Rubens painted around 1610 - 1611, is kept at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorff (see M. Jaffé, Rubens, Milan, 1989, n°141, reproduced). Born perhaps in Russia to parents of Italian origin, between 1761 and 1765, Pietro de Rossi spent his entire career in Saint Petersburg. Around 1800, he became the appointed miniaturist of the Russian aristocracy and the imperial court. Having received the title of miniature painter from His Majesty's Cabinet, he became a professor of miniature painting at the Imperial Academy in 1813. Many of his small portraits were engraved by Francesco Vendramini and Igor Skotnikov. He is credited with a portrait of Count Stroganov, dated 1815 (Christie's Sale, London, 27 November 2007, No. 190, reproduced). His 1813 self-portrait is kept at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
