Claude MONET(1840-1926) (Attribué à)
Water lilies, fragment Oil on canvas. On the back of the frame is a label Etude de couleurs pour les "Nympheas" offered by M. Hochedé in 1953 32 x 32 cm Provenance: Private collection Collection François PIET Galerie Hubert DUCHEMIN Claude Monet painted the cycle of the Nympheas during the last three decades of his life. It is an exceptional set of 250 canvases of very different formats and dimensions. Sometimes unsatisfied with his work, the artist has lacerated some of his great compositions. The fragment of canvas presented here is typical of what remains of the large compositions that the artist did not wish to preserve. Remaining in a corner of the studio, these fragments could have been given by Claude Monet's children or stepchildren, in this case probably Jean-Pierre Hoschedé (1877-1961) in 1953. These numerous fragments of cut canvases are not included in the catalogue raisonné of Claude Monet's work drawn up by the Wildenstein Institute.
