Page from a manuscript of Ferdausi's Shahnameh, Iran, mid-19th century Persian text in black ink between 20 and 22 lines on 4 columns. Titles in red ink in a cartridge on a gold background. The miniature illustrates the trials of Esfandyâr, who must overcome seven trials, each more difficult than the next, in order to save his sisters imprisoned in a fortress called Rouin Dezh. Dim. page: 32,5 x 21 cm a) Folio presenting the first two Haft Khâns events of the hero Esfandiyar. Text titled in red ink in two cartouches mentioning on one side and the top one "Esfandyâr asks Gorgsâr", and the bottom one "Esfandyât kills the wolf". The painting here shows Esfandiyar riding his white horse killing wolves with arrows. On the other side, the title in red ink: "Esfandyâr kills the lion". The miniature depicts him on his white horse wiping out the lions with a sword in front of his army on the hills. Miniature dimensions: 10.5 x18 and 10 x 18 cm 600/800
