Ecole française du XIXe siècle, d'après Germain Pilon (Paris, 1528- Paris, 1590)
Bishop Jean de Morviller, Bishop of Orléans Bust in bronze with brown patina. 72 x 64 x 28 cm Cast in lost wax, this beautiful bronze bust representing Bishop Jean de Morviller, Bishop of Orléans, is a copy of the work made by Germain Pilon, major sculptor of the second half of the 16th century. At the height of his fame after having built the tomb of Henry II and Catherine de Medicis in Saint Denis, the artist was commissioned in 1578 to execute the funeral monument of this great royal minister in the church of the Cordeliers de Blois. Germain Pilon painted the portrait from a death mask executed shortly after Jean Morviller's death. Related work: Germain Pilon, Funeral bust of Jean de Morvillier, 1578-1579, H.72 cm, bronze, Orléans, Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Orléans, Inv. 1784.
