BRETON (André), poète et écrivain français (1896-1966).
2 documents. 3 autograph lines signed to lawyer and essayist Maurice Garçon (1889-1967) at the bottom of an article entitled "Formes de l'art" (s.l.n.d. 1955) 2 p. in-4°. "If the problem of the relationship of magic with religion, on the one hand, and with science on the other hand, has long since arisen... the problem of the relationship of magic with art has, so to speak, not yet been tackled.... "Breton has been commissioned by the editors of "Formes de l'art" to write a volume on "magic art". After quoting Marcel Brion, who points out the similarity of aspect to the confrontation of such and such an abstract work of today with the decoration of a 3rd millennium Susa vase, and to avoid any subjectivism, Breton submits to a few specialists his 5-point questionnaire on magic art. This one is addressed to Maurice Garçon "If Me Maurice Garçon gives me the grace not to find these questions too formalist, as their author refuses to celebrate Huysmans if he had to endure a mass. Tribute of deference and gratitude. "L.A.S. Paris March 1, 1953, 2/3 p. in-4° " Master, I am deeply touched to see you taking all this trouble for me. The whole opinion has made your name a kind of Sesame and I do not doubt the very great effectiveness of your intervention on my behalf. Once again, I express to you my deepest gratitude... ».
