HAUSSMANN (Georges Eugène) (1809-1891)
L.A.S. to "Monsieur (Charles) Merruau" (s.l.n.d.) 4 p. in-8° on blue paper to his number. Interesting letter with a touch of irony, in which he evokes his last misadventure "... Decidedly I am treated as a sovereign. Osman-Pasha is no longer enough; I am put in the rank of sultan or rather of Tzar: it is claimed that I am devoted to assassination! I suspect that it is to give rise to the idea of this simple and expeditious means of ridding those who have been in the way of my person for too long! - Basically, a poor devil of a roadmender, dismissed for drunkenness, shows up in a state of absinthe, to talk to me (he claims it was to ask for my reinstatement) but as he was talking high in the woods, beating the trees... he is arrested at the gate of Longchamp... he is searched; he carries a Catalan knife... it looks good in a police report and it looks better in the newspapers and elsewhere, as proof of my unpopularity! When I go out on foot in the evening, or when I cross through the woods, I always carry a pretty little revolver in my pocket or in my car; but I swear to you that I never wanted to murder the Ladies that I have been able to go and see, with this accessory...".
