MILLER (Henry), romancier américain (1891-1980)
L.A.S., to Guy Tosi, literary director of the Denoël publishing house, Big Sur, 10 October 1947, 4 p. in-4°. Miller thanks him for his encouraging letter because he generally has a bad impression of French publishers, he will be delighted to dedicate the books he sends him. He was astonished to learn from Mrs. Voilier that Cendrars' books were not selling much in France. He thought it had an international appeal, so he is trying to find foreign publishers for her, especially for her last 2 books. He received a clipping of "Combat" by his friend the painter Hans Reichel about Michael Fraenkel and the book "Hamlet" 33 which they wrote together and which was not accepted by Maurice Girodias, he can try with Denoël. He praises Dithern who was never a Nazi, he is a citizen of the world, he tries to find a publisher for him. "Then when I see the condition of Europeans I am ashamed to feel poor " the poorest of us is rich by comparison with the millions of desperate souls throughout the civilized world...I share with those less fortunate.... " Obelisk Press, the publishing house of Girodias' father, first published Tropic of Cancer in 1934.
