SAINTE-BEUVE (Charles-Augustin) (1804-1869) Manuscript partly autograph and signed "Sainte Beuve" entitled Alexis Piron. (s.l.n.d.) 42 p. in-4°. Manuscript with many important corrections and additions signed autograph. The pages are numbered in black ink from 1 to 39, presence of bis. This study on Piron was first written for the Revue Contemporaine in 1864, then taken up again in the preface to the edition of Piron's Selected Works in April 1866: "Piron, salt and gaiety itself, is a tempting subject, but it is difficult to make it keep all that it promises; pure gaiety is not resurrected: it has sprung up, it has jumped to the ceiling, it has dissipated.... he has left a reputation for foolishness and jovial illumination which his writings do not support or justify only imperfectly. He was not so much an author as a nature, a specialty of nature, something impromptu and irresistible ... ».
