ZOLA (Émile) (1840-1902)
L.A.S. to " Dear Sir " (Jules Troubat) Pairs 19 March 1880, 2 p. in-8°. Very interesting letter on Sainte Beuve. "I read your letters with great interest... You simply had the mistake... of looking in my articles for a complete physiognomy of Sainte Beuve, when I only wanted to study a very characteristic phase of our French criticism.... I don't know exactly what you call my "system". If it is my personality you are talking about, it is certain that it is difficult for me to strip it down ... I agree with you...that Saint Beuve was affected by having the system of having no system. But he had a personality, and one of the strongest, most persistent personalities I've come up against in every page of his work. I'm sure one thing is that I accept him, whereas he probably wouldn't have accepted me at all. So my formula is broader. The struggle for truth will be eternal... Finally you felt that I wanted to be fair, and that's enough for me... ».
