MODERN ATLAS, or Collection of maps on all... - Lot 232 - Baron Ribeyre & Associés
MODERN ATLAS, or Collection of maps on all parts of the Earth by several authors. Paris, Lattré, Delalain, s.d. (1771-1783) - Rigobert BONNE. Collection of maps on ancient geography. Paris, Lattré, 1783. Set of 2 atlases in one volume in folio, half-basane, smooth spine with full-length C.V. figures (end of 18th century binding). Cohen, 105 /Phillips, I. 646. For the first atlas: title-frontispiece engraved by Prévost after Monnet, 2 double plates of spheres and globes, and, of spheres and compasses, and 72 double-page maps engraved by Janvier, Bonne and Rizzi-Zannoni. This atlas had been designed by Lattré and Delalain in order to offer users the maximum amount of information in a more convenient format than the large folio. A first series of 36 maps was published in 1762 with an engraved title. Due to the success of the work, the publishers published a new edition in 1771 with the same title, the 36 initial plates plus 38 additional plates. For the second atlas: an allegorical title by Louis Legrand after Marillier, 2 unencrypted leaves: an engraved Warning and Index leaf, and 20 maps on double page. Nice copy with the maps in colors. Defects of use at the binding. Several plates restored, including 6 with a new margin, 2 stained plates, 4 plates with slightly shorter margins on the side.
