Jean-François Janinet
Views of the most beautiful public and private buildings of the city of Paris... accompanied by interesting notes on architecture and its revolutions in France; with curious anecdotes on the origin of each monument in particular. Paris, Esnauts and Rapilly, s.d. (ca. 1787). In-4 in the Italian style, burgundy Jansenist morocco, back with 5 nerves, wide inner lace, gilt edges (Rivière and Son). Cohen, 516 / Reynaud, 262. Very rare series of views of Paris drawn by Durand and engraved in colour by Janinet. According to Cohen: "This work does not seem to have been completed. Destailleur had collected the title and 42 plates printed in colour, one oval (31), the other rectangular (12). Later, all the oval brass plates were enlarged, retouched and made rectangular and the material for a third collection was drawn from them. Reynaud gives the exact title of each plate, indicating the rectangular or oval formats. Our copy conforms to this description in all respects, with one exception: the Vue de l'hôtel de Paris, which he calls rectangular, is here oval in shape. It is probable that the copy he used for his description had this plate only in a second edition. Nice copy in spite of the slightly rubbed jaws.
