École FRANÇAISE du XVIIIe siècle
Portrait of a man holding a rose, after Louis Vigée Crayon black, sanguine and lightly blurred. 33.6 x 26.2 cm Lined drawing, upper corners and missing on the edges restored, trace of wetness in the center right. Slightly insulated, traces of restoration. Annotated on the reverse: "Alexandre Jean Joseph Leriche de la Popélinière, famous for the prodigalities and the protection he gave to the fine arts and literature / French school of the 18th century / C.N.Cochin del.t" / "For Sybille and Olivier Goirand with all our best wishes for happiness/Alixte and Pierre Bordeaux Groult/7 July 1986". We know of an engraving in the opposite direction of our drawing signed Jean-Joseph Balechou (circa 1750?) after a lost painting by Louis Vigée. The accompanying poem is: "For these flowers there is only spring / At least life has its autumn / Let us take what fate gives us / And know the price of time."
