J. SUDRE.
The Noble Mail Game of the City of Montpellier, With its Rules. Montpellier, Jean Martel Ainé, 1772. In-8, ornate red morocco, lace with small irons on the plates with birds, flowers, branches, rocailles, nicely decorated smooth spine, gold edges, modern grief embellishment, nicely decorated smooth spine (Binding of the period). Quérard, IX-283///(4f.)-XVI-45 (badly numbered 54)-(3f.). Very rare first edition bearing a fictitious mention of New Edition. The work is unknown in bibliographies. It is just referenced by Quérard in La France littéraire, which only cites the 1822 edition. It is one of the oldest manuals on the game of mail, ancestor of golf, croquet and generally speaking ball games with mallets. It is illustrated with a folding board for the True Measure and Severe of the weight of the ball up to 16 ounces weight of marc, 6 diagrams in the text and a full-page sketch entitled Plan Pour le tirage du globe, another game of boule and mallet, here embellished with silver bets, described at the end of the book and which consists in shooting at a target. Superb copy with the board and the coloured diagrams at the time. It is bound in a fresh morocco binding of the time decorated with a bird lace. It has no freckles. Considering the rarity of this edition, this copy must be one of the most beautiful you can find. From the Thomas Munro library with its ex-libris on the first cover. Back a little bit faded and minimal wear at the corners.
