Horace-Bénedict de SAUSSURE. - Lot 61
Horace-Bénedict de SAUSSURE. Trips to the Alps, preceded by an essay on the natural history of the area around Geneva. Neuchâtel, Fauche, Fauche-Borel, 1779-1796. 4 volumes in-4, marbled basane, triple fillet, spine with 5 decorated nerves (Pastiche binding). Brunet, V-150/Hoefer, XLIII-372/Perret, II-3911/Pritzel, 8050///I. 1779, (2f.)-XXXVI-540-(1f.)/II. 1794, (2f.)-568/III. 1796, (2f.)-XX-532-(1f.)/IV. 1796, (3f.)-594-(1f.). ORIGINAL EDITION of this major work by Saussure, decorated with 4 title vignettes, 1 (out of 2) folding cards, 22 plates, 17 of which are folding, 4 compositions in the text engraved on copper by Bourrit, Geissler, Topffer, Wexelberg... after Bourrit and Saussure. Volume II is here republished in 1794. Hoefer indicates that the title is too restricted, since the author also travels... the Jura, the Vosges, the mountains of Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Sicily and adjacent islands, and the extinct volcanoes of France and the banks of the Rhine. We would like to add that the title is also too restricted as it does not mention the scientific side of this journey, especially in mineralogy, as the author never ceases to describe and study the rocks that form the mountains, as well as in geology and meteorology. The book was carefully washed before being bound. There are still ghosts of old browning which do not affect the quality of the copy. Some rubbing with epidermides, missing a map, last leaves of volume III more brown, inversion of 4 leaves.
