FERRY (Jules) (1832-1893) 2 documents. 2... - Lot 17 - Baron Ribeyre & Associés
FERRY (Jules) (1832-1893) 2 documents. 2 L.A.S. Paris, March 12, 1890 and July 4, 1892. 5 pp. small in-8° and in-8. Letter of March 12 on mourning paper and that of July 4 on the letterhead of the Senate. Very interesting documents dealing with colonization and its reverse. March 12, 1890 "I am completely of your opinion on the inappropriateness... the detestable offer of a polemic between the two African explorers (...) I cannot help but find the opinion very frivolous and very changeable concerning Brazza. After having put him above Stanley, here he is being put below everyone else. I am striving for more stability in judgment. I am aware of Brazza's projects (...) the man to whom we owe a large part of Africa (...)" and on July 4, 1892 he reports on the expenses of the "Commission for the study of Algerian questions". During this trip he discovers the other side of colonization. He indicates "You put at my disposal, as President of the commission of study of the Algerian questions for the expenses of voyage (...) a sum of eight thousand francs of which I must account to you. Seven members of the study commission took part in the investigation. They added a secretary, Mr. Pensa, a lawyer at the Court of Appeal, who kept accurate notes of the countless testimonies collected during forty-nine days of travel and study...". The delegates did not cover the entire 4086 km itinerary and were divided into several missions. Ferry gives the names and expenses for each mission leader, the total amount being 7920f.
