Half-top PIANO made at the end of the 19th... - Lot 255 - Baron Ribeyre & Associés
Half-top PIANO made at the end of the 19th century by MANGEOT Frères in NANCY. Serial number: 3178. Brass plate on the cylinder marked "STEINWAY & SONS". Signature of the maker on the table: "MANGEOT Frères & Cie./sole dealers/ M.M. STEINWAY & Fils/New-York." Alfred MANGEOT (Nancy 1831-Paris 1889) and his brother Edouard-Joseph (Nancy 1835-Paris 1898) raised their father's business to the level of the leading Parisian firms, as evidenced by the medals and reputation acquired at specialized Exhibitions. It is in one of them that they discover the models presented by the STEINWAY workshops. Edouard goes to New-York to study the technique. "Struck by their superiority, as much by the grandeur and beauty of their sound as by their construction, in which lies the secret of this superiority, M.M. MANGEOT asked and obtained from M.M. STEINWAY the title of concessionaires for France for the manufacture of grand and upright pianos according to the American models. " ("La musique, les musiciens et les instruments de musique chez les différents peuples du monde" Oscar Commettant, Paris 1869, pp 692) The instrument, in working condition, shows some traces of wear and restoration. It has been relacquered. Sale by designation (visible in the study).
