Charles-François MAZOIS. - Lot 274
Charles-François MAZOIS. The Ruins of Pompeii drawn and measured during the years MDCCCIX - MDCCCX - MDCCCXI. Paris, Didot, 1824- 1838. 4 parts in 2 volumes in-folio, red half-chagrin with corners, spine with 5 ornate nerves, central English coat of arms (Binding of the period). Brunet, III-1561 /// I. (1f.)-59/II. (2f.)-104-(1f.)/III. 79/IV. (2f.)-VI-91-(1f.). Beautiful collection on Pompeii illustrated with copper engravings including a repeated title vignette, an engraved title, 46 illustrations in the text and 202 plates out of text. 2 of these plates are not mentioned in the tables but they seem to us to be quite part of the work. The copy bears a spurious handwritten note on the flyleaf of the first volume indicating that it was given by Caroline Bonaparte. Defects to the binding, one hinge cracked, foxing and stains.
