Pablo PICASSO.
Bookplate of Max Pellequer. Etchings in black. S.n.n.d. (Ateliers Lacourière et Frélaut, 1930). 135 x 97 mm./135 x 94 mm. Framed under glass with gilt rod, 162 x 200 mm. Baer, 198. A very rare etching by Picasso, printed on Chine, depicting two bookplates made for the collector Max Pellequer. Originally, these two bookplates were on the same plate, 140 x 195 mm. in size, separated by an ink line. They have been separated here and the margins have been slightly trimmed. The ink line has been removed. Two prints are mentioned by Baert, one before the letter, on Rives vellum, printed by Fort in 1930 of which 2 proofs are known, and another with the letter, on Chine, printed by Lacourière in 1934 of which the number is not defined. It is certain that 15 proofs were printed for the collector, these 15 proofs being signed and justified by Picasso, but it is very likely that Lacourière printed others. Our print is on Chine. It contains no handwriting and is not signed. The two bookplates are laminated on laid paper, in the upper margin for about 15 mm. The glue used seems to be quite neutral, no marks or yellowing appearing in the upper margin. These bookplates are all the more rare as they were not meant to be distributed but were intended for the exclusive use of the collector, in this case Max Pellequer.
