Burgundian-Flemish territory or Northern France, 15th centur - Lot 168
Burgundian-Flemish territory or Northern France, 15th century Scene of the circumcision of Christ Carved group in relief in polychrome and gilded wood from an altarpiece Dim. 43 x 48.5 x 14 cm (Accidents and restoration of two heads of characters in the background on the left of the sculpture) Our carved group was probably part of a larger ensemble relating the life of Christ and adorning an altarpiece. Around a hexagonal altar, the Virgin presents Christ to a priest who is about to circumcise the newborn child according to the precepts of Jewish tradition. This episode, recounted in the Gospel according to Saint Luke (2:21), was a great iconographic success when Jacques de Voragine devoted a chapter to it in his Golden Legend (1261-1266). This fortune is explained by the great symbolic value of this episode. It is both the humanity of Christ and his place in the line of Jewish prophets that are celebrated in the act of circumcision.
