MESRINE Jacques (1936-1979) nicknamed public enemy number one.
2 L.A.S. to Jeanne Schneider, Santé prison, July 9 and 11, 76. 8 pp. in-8. Letters marked "F1".
On July 9, Mesrine gives an update on business: "I had a visit from Smadja, who is going to do everything he can to ensure that your case goes through with my 'hold-ups' [] regarding our appeal on the 'Setruck' case, it is refused: the death threat will go through with the Assize case []"; on July 11, he rages against behavior he finds unjust or stupid. "Calisti" refused a request on his part (communication of a magazine) with the response "impossible you are isolated" and continues "Yes I am isolated to the point that if I call at night in my neighborhood it takes 30 minutes to come []" he goes on to describe his action in front of a hanged fellow inmate. Mesrine's door being open, he rushes to help: "He was unconscious and purple, I quickly gave him first aid [] I managed to resuscitate him. The guard's reaction: "you saved his life" [] management's thoughts: "what was Mesrine doing outside his cell" [] he adds: "I have every intention of writing an open letter to him* in 'libération' []". *Mr. Ange-Pierre Calisti, prison director.
