MESRINE Jacques (1936-1979) nicknamed public enemy number one. 3 L.A.S. to Jeanne Schneider, Fleury-Merogis prison, August 15, 16 and 17, 76. 13 pp. in-8. Letters marked "F1". On August 15, he sums up his first Sunday at Fleury: "my midday lunch was very copious [] a walk in my 4th-floor courtyard [] I play pelote basque []"; he refers to a news item, announces that he is answering to his daughter and evokes their wedding: "patience, my angel, you'll give me that famous noose around my neck! []"; on August 16, he talks about his correspondence with Freda and the visit of "Pelletier", his lawyer, whom he compliments; on August 17, a long letter in which he talks about his daughter's stay in Canada and her premature return, "Joyce" [Jocelyne Deraiche] and her father being ill. He goes on to talk about the organization of visiting hours, and more generally about his conditions of detention, which have deteriorated sharply: cell changes, modified promenade yard, regular waking up at night, etc.
