MESRINE Jacques (1936-1979) nicknamed public enemy number on - Lot 81
MESRINE Jacques (1936-1979) nicknamed public enemy number one. 8 L.A.S. to Jeanne Schneider, Fleury-Merogis prison, January 10, 12, 13, 14 and 16 to 19, 77 and (s.d.) . 16 pp. folio. One letter illustrated with a drawing. On the 10th, he begins his letter with the news of a new suicide at Fleury: "This jail is a man-eater, with comfortable cells! [He goes on to talk about the number of suicides last year: "If the figure '41' is true, it's unbelievable. What a massacre []" On January 12, Mesrine again hesitates between several publishers. He is annoyed by the nonsense in L'Aurore: "Parait-il que je remplissais" contracts "pauvre con de journaliste []"; on January 13, he is delighted by Jeanne's change of job and comments on a procedure initiated by a "Charlie" prisoner; on January 14, he is happy because he has finally received news from Daoust, and even offers to manage the book's distribution in Canada. He also talks about his copyright: "I put everything in your name and nothing in my mother's name []", and insists that "don't let me stop you. []" and insists "don't forget your summons to appear before the judge on the '20th' at 5 p.m."; on the 16th, he announces "the book will be on the runway on March 1 [ ] do you know that we have changed the title 'impact de mort' will perhaps be the new title chosen. []"; on the 17th, he talks in no particular order about his impending divorce, and Raf's reaction "with his 'I'll soon regret it' threat or warning? [I sign with whomever I wish. I've been walking on my own since I was two years old (sic) []" and concludes his letter with the news of Gary Gilmore's execution "I think it's very good, since he asked for it - a man is free to choose - death is preferable to life imprisonment []"; on the 18th, he explains his strategy "That's why your provisional liberty was important, to show that you weren't the same person you were at the time of the alleged offences. I think the proof is in the pudding []"; on the 19th, he is equally amused and annoyed by Jeanne's jealousy after reading the book's manuscript.
