JAPAN, For export - EDO period (1603 - 1868), XVIIE SIECLE Pair of cabinets in black lacquer, hira and taka maki-e in gold and silver lacquer, mirror-decorated with figures in and around the Kiyomizu dera temple. The two doors open to reveal ten drawers decorated with mountain landscapes and temples. Both doors decorated with roosters and hens under flowers surrounded by a band of silver lacquer on a gold nashiji background. The sides, top and back are decorated with birds and flowers. Chased copper fittings with peonies, chrysanthemums and stylized flowers. (Some minor wear and tear, very good overall condition). Dim. 88.5 x 99.5 x 52 cm Later legs in black lacquered wood. A similar cabinet in the Spencer Galleries, Althorp, entered the collection in 1744 by Duchess Sarah of Marlborough (1660-1744).
