Giorgio Matteo da Sibenico, known as George the Dalmatian, represented the early 15th-century school of sculpture in Dalmatia, Venicia and Marche. He was born in Zadar, then under Venetian rule. His rediscovery of classical art is expressed in a continuity of late Gothic canons. His work is described as soft Gothic. Giorgio da Sibénico worked on both sides of the Adriatic. In 1441, he was called upon to build the Cathedral of St. James in Sibenik, where he directed the work until 1473. The angel we present today can be compared to some of the sculptures on the portal of St. James' Cathedral (fig).
