This delicate bust of five-year-old Louise Brongniart (1772-1845) is a slight variation on one of the most emblematic models by the sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828). Louise Brongniart's original portrait was shown at the Salon of 1777, alongside that of her brother Alexandre Brongniart. The artist's models included his three daughters, Sabine, Anne-Ange and Claudine. Encouraged by the success of these portraits at the Salon, Houdon commissioned several plaster, terracotta and marble models, with variations in cut, costume and hairstyle.
