Allegories with Truth triumphing over Lies
Canvas
60 x 73 cm
The composition of our painting is rich in allegorical messages. In the center, the personification of Truth in the guise of a masked young woman holding a pomegranate, moving towards the seated Lie in the guise of a topless old woman holding snakes in one hand and a closed book in the other. In the center, a dwarf with grotesque features is accompanied by a fire-breathing Hydra, often associated with insults or backbiting. On the right, a putto leads a chained monkey, a symbol of sin.
We could therefore interpret this scene as Truth being prevented from triumphing over Lies, held back by vice.
We would like to thank Gilles Chambon for his help in identifying the subject of our painting.
